OEM Development of Plastic Household Goods
through Global Collaboration
- Global Consumer Goods Manufacturer
- In China, we design, prototype, and evaluate plastic molds and assembly equipment, then transfer production to our factory in Mexico for mass production of household goods for the North American market. Through close collaboration among our global teams, we completed the precision molds and successfully launched the product to market within a short timeframe.
- Background and Client Issues
- The client has been planning to introduce a new line of plastic household goods for the North American market. However, with limited experience in the design and mass production of high-precision multi-cavity molds, the main challenge lay in establishing global-scale manufacturing within a short timeframe. In particular, a smooth process —from mold design and prototyping in China to the transfer of mass production to Mexico— while maintaining consistent quality was required. Integrating process coordination and communication across multiple locations was also essential, making strong project management skills and an effective international collaboration framework key to success.
- Development Process and Yamada’s Contribution
- Based on the design drawings provided by the client, we created manufacturing drawings and established evaluation standards in Japan. Our factory in China then designed high-precision multi-cavity molds. After multiple rounds of prototyping and debugging in China to finalize high-precision molds suitable for mass production, we shipped them to our factory in Mexico, where additional rounds of prototyping and evaluation were conducted. The project was carried out under a global framework: The technical team in Japan managed overall coordination; the factory team in China handled design and prototyping; the U.S. sales team acted as the primary point of contact with the client; and the factory team in Mexico managed the ramp-up of mass production. Through seamless collaboration among these locations and by optimizing the balance of quality, speed, and cost, we successfully achieved mass production for the North American market within a short timeframe.
- Future Outlook
- Leveraging the expertise in global collaboration and precision mold development cultivated through this project, we will continue to take on mass production projects for OEM product development targeting overseas markets. Furthermore, we will establish an efficient international project model involving coordinated teams in China, Mexico, Japan, and the United States to further enhance the value provided to our clients.
- Voice of a Team Member
-
The greatest challenge in this project was maintaining close coordination among the teams in China, Mexico, Japan, and the United States. Prototyping the multi-cavity precision molds required extremely fine adjustments, and we repeated multiple cycles of prototyping and debugging. By maintaining close communication and information sharing with these locations and working together to resolve issues, we succeeded in the ramp-up of mass production. This experience of delivering results within a short timeframe as a unified global team greatly enhanced our capabilities in global project management and problem-solving.
